TREATED IN DULUTH, GA (NORTH OF ATLANTA) at Georgia Eye Physicians & Surgeons
Dry eye is a common condition that occurs when the eyes do not produce tears properly, or when tears evaporate too quickly. Besides discomfort and blurry vision, this condition can cause ulcers, vision loss, or scars on the cornea if left untreated.
Tears are produced by lacrimal glands and are imperative for protecting the surface of the eye from bacteria and other infections. There are many causes of dry eye which can range from temporary or chronic including: skin disease, disease of the tear glands, side effects from certain medications, pregnancy, hormones, outdoor activity, diet, allergies, and trauma.
Permanent and dissolvable punctual plugs (tiny silicone plugs) are an option for treating dry eye by plugging the tear duct drain openings. Dissolvable plugs last a couple days and are commonly used following eye surgery. These plugs can be placed in the inner corner of your upper and lower eyelid where the tear drains are located to conserve your own tears for eye lubrication or artificial tears that may have been added.
