Comprehensive Medical Eye Examination

TREATED IN DULUTH, GA (NORTH OF ATLANTA) AT GEORGIA EYE PHYSICIANS & SURGEONS

Many serious eye problems, like glaucoma or cataracts, develop gradually over the course of several years, but if they can be diagnosed early there are options for treatment that may not be available once the condition has had an opportunity to progress. A Comprehensive Medical Eye Exam uses a variety of highly specialized tests and a thorough examination of the eye’s interior. This allows Dr. Segal or Dr. Lay to evaluate the health of the eyes and, more importantly, to track subtle changes that may indicate the onset of serious conditions that a more routine screening might miss. A full Comprehensive Medical Eye Exam can often even identify the earliest symptoms of medical conditions unrelated to the eyes, like multiple sclerosis, diabetes, shingles, or high cholesterol. Comprehensive Medical Eye Exams generally take anywhere from one and a half to two hours to perform, and because they require that the eyes be dilated using special eye drops, patients will usually experience light sensitivity and blurry vision for several hours after the exam.

In addition to the standard tests performed during a routine vision exam, a comprehensive medical examination will also include the following diagnostic tests:

  • Color Blindness Test: Detects hereditary color blindness and alerts us to possible problems that may affect your color vision.
  • Cover Test: Checks how well your eyes work together in order to detect strabismus or other binocular vision problems that could cause eye strain or amblyopia (“lazy eye”).
  • Retinoscopy: Allows us to observe the way light reflects from the eye in order to evaluate refractive errors or astigmatism.
  • Slit-Lamp Examination: Allows us to get a magnified view of the structures of your eye so that we can thoroughly evaluate your eye health and detect signs of infection or diseases like glaucoma, cataracts, and retinopathy.
  • Glaucoma Test: Uses a small puff of air to measure the pressure in your eyes in order to help us determine whether you have glaucoma.
  • Visual Field Test: Checks for the presence of blind spots (scotomas) in your peripheral or “side” vision which can originate from eye diseases such as glaucoma.
  • Fundus Photos: Digital images of the interior of the eye that are painlessly captured using specialized photographic equipment to detect abnormalities of the retina, vitreous, choroid, and optic nerve.
  • External Eye Photography: Pictures of the eye taken with a high-resolution digital camera are used to gauge the progression of skin conditions that can affect the eye area such as eyelid lesions, rosacea, blepharitis, or skin cancer.
