Corneal ulcers are open sores that form on the cornea (clear front layer of the eye) caused by an infection (bacterial, parasitic, viral or fungal) that invades the eye due to improper contact lens hygiene, eye injury, trauma or other damage. Common symptoms of corneal ulcers are redness, intense pain due to nerve exposure, blurred vision, light sensitivity, tearing and/or discharge. If left untreated, corneal ulcers can lead to loss of vision or the eye itself, so it is imperative that you consult your ophthalmologist to avoid permanent damage. Antibiotics, antifungal or antiviral eye drops are common treatments recommended to treat corneal infection. In more severe cases that cannot be treated with the use of eyedrops, an emergency corneal transplant may be required by your ophthalmologist to prevent further damage to the eye.
