Foreign Objects in the Eye

TREATED IN DULUTH, GA (NORTH OF ATLANTA) at Georgia Eye Physicians & Surgeons

Foreign bodies are small particles or objects that adhere to or penetrate the cornea (clear front layer of the eye) when not wearing protective eyewear around potentially volatile objects. Foreign bodies such as eyelashes, sand, glass, wood, plastic or metal can accidentally enter the eye causing sharp pain, burning, blurred vision or even bleeding within the eye (most commonly associated with a penetrating foreign body). Minor foreign bodies can be treated at home by flushing the eye with sterile saline solution and/or water or by using a cotton swab to gently wipe away the foreign body. For more serious foreign body cases, in-office or hospital removal by your ophthalmologist is the best way to prevent further damage or infections to the eye.
