Eyeglass and Contact Lens Prescriptions

Your eyesight can change over time, so keeping your vision healthy and sharp means scheduling routine eye examinations to evaluate and update your eye glass or contact lens prescription. Board certified ophthalmologist, Dr. William Segal, and licensed optometrist, Dr. Marc Lay, combine the most advanced technology with their years of professional experience to assess your eyes quickly and efficiently and to determine the treatment options that are best for you.

Every patient is different, so the frequency of contact or eye glass prescription re-evaluation will depend upon your unique needs and the presence of any ongoing eye conditions or diseases. For most patients, annual eye exams are recommended to ensure optimal eye health and accurate lens prescription. Initially, patients should undergo a comprehensive medical eye exam to diagnose any existing eye conditions and determine a baseline against which to measure any future changes. After this, patients have one of two options:

Within a few weeks after your lenses have been prescribed, additional follow-up examinations will be recommended to monitor eye health, quality of vision, and proper fitting.

All glasses purchased from Georgia Eye Physicians & Surgeons Optical Center are treated with the Crizal Avancé coating and carry a two-year scratch warranty, and all of our optical center’s frames also carry at least a one-year manufacturer’s warranty. Prescription Contact Lenses

For patients who lead particularly active lifestyles, who need to maintain exceptionally clear peripheral vision, or who simply prefer not to wear eyeglasses, Georgia Eye Physicians and Surgeons also offers a wide selection of prescription contact lenses. While not necessarily suitable for all patients, or for the treatment of all vision problems, contact lenses can safely address a wide variety of difficulties, including myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism, and keratoconus. There are several different types of specialized contact lenses available, including:

Disposable Contact Lenses

The most common type of contact lenses, disposable contact lenses are designed to be worn for a specified period of time then discarded and replaced. They are recommended for patients with allergies or whose eyes are prone to forming deposits, require no cleaning, and may carry less risk of transmitting eye infections.

Gas Permeable Contact Lenses (“Hard” Contact Lenses)

Unlike soft contact lenses, gas permeable contact lenses do not contain water, which makes them more resistant to dry eye, mineral deposits, and bacteria. Because the more rigid lens maintains its shape, vision stays focused and unaffected when the patient blinks. They can also be highly effective in correcting certain ocular diseases as they can reshape the front of the eye and in correcting for corneal irregularities like scarring or protrusion. With proper care, gas permeable lenses can be used for up to two to three years before they need to be replaced.

Multifocal and Toric Contact lenses

When the cornea of the eye is conical or irregularly shaped, as is the case in patients with astigmatism or keratoconus, contact lenses must be custom designed to provide different levels of vision correction at different points. The experienced team at Georgia Eye uses the most advanced technology available to individually design each contact lens so that it precisely fits the specifications of the patient. Toric and multifocal contact lenses are available in a wide variety of styles and options.

Bandage Contact Lenses

After a patient has sustained corneal damage due to injury or disease, bandage contact lenses are often used to promote healing and reduce discomfort. Custom designed to fit an individual eye, a bandage contact lens moves less when the patient blinks, so there is less painful friction on the eye’s surface or cornea, and medication can be added to further promote healing. These lenses are often prescribed to patients who are recovering from some forms of refractive eye surgery.

Scleral and Medical Contact Lenses

For patients with irregular corneas, severe dry eyes, or other hard-to-fit ocular conditions, scleral and other specialized medical contact lenses can provide crisp, comfortable vision when standard contacts or glasses are insufficient. At Georgia Eye Physicians and Surgeons, we offer several types of advanced medical contact lenses:

Scleral Lenses

These large-diameter gas permeable lenses vault over the entire corneal surface and rest on the white of the eye, which is called the sclera. By replacing the irregular cornea with a perfectly smooth optical surface, scleral lenses provide sharp vision for people with keratoconus, corneal scars, or extreme dry eye. 

A fluid reservoir between the lens and cornea ensures comfort.

Hybrid Lenses

Composed of a rigid gas permeable central zone and a soft peripheral skirt, hybrid lenses offer the crisp optics of hard lenses and the comfort and stability of soft lenses. They are an excellent option for patients with moderate corneal irregularities or astigmatism.

Sunglasses

Even if you don’t require corrective eyewear, it is still important to protect your eyes, especially from the sun’s harsh ultraviolet (UV) rays. Our optical center carries sunglasses like Maui Jim, available in prescription and non-prescription lenses, which will protect your eyes from harmful ultraviolet damage and degenerative eye conditions and diseases. Dr. Segal and Dr. Lay take into consideration each patient’s preferences and provide the best solutions for your vision needs when finding the fit that is most comfortable to you.

Sports Goggles

In addition to skill and strength, vision is a very important component to perform well in any sport. Eye protection should be a major concern for all athletes, especially in high-risk contact sports. Many of the sports-related eye injuries that patients suffer each year could have potentially been prevented by wearing proper protective eyewear. Sports goggles are designed to protect eyes from foreign objects, sun damage, and contact with other athletes.

At Georgia Eye Physicians and Surgeons we offer a variety of sports goggles specific to each sport. Many are designed for contact sports like basketball or soccer, to fit in helmets for football or baseball, and for sports with equipment like tennis or golf.
