Introducing the Light Adjustable Lens

Get unmatched visual customization with the revolutionary Light Adjustable Lens and the Light Adjustable Lens Plus - the first type of lens that lets you fine-tune your vision after cataract surgery.

What is the

Light Adjustable Lens?

The Light Adjustable Lens and the Light Adjustable Lens Plus, also called the LAL and the LAL+, are unique types of artificial lenses that are used to replace natural lenses during cataract surgery. Unlike other types of IOLs, which have to have their power set before surgery, the LAL is able to be adjusted after cataract surgery.

Thanks to this technology, your Georgia Eye Physicians & Surgeons cataract surgeon is able to change the lens focusing power after you’ve healed from cataract surgery, so you can test drive and customize your vision.

Light Adjustable Lens

One of the most critical choices in your cataract surgery journey is which intraocular lens will replace your natural lens during the procedure. An intraocular lens, or IOL, is an artificial lens implanted in the eye as part of a cataract surgery.

The Light Adjustable Lens and Light Adjustable Lens Plus are unique types of IOLs that allow customization and fine-tuning of vision after surgery. At Georgia Eye Physicians & Surgeons, we are proud to offer these innovative IOLs to patients who desire greater ability to customize their vision.

Do you have cataracts and think it may be time for cataract surgery?

How Does the

Light Adjustable Lens Work?

After cataract surgery, you will need to return to your eye doctor’s office for a series of follow-up visits. Once your eyes have healed from the procedure, your eye doctor will use a special device called the Light Delivery Device to expose your new lens to ultraviolet light.

This light causes the tiny molecules inside the lens to change shape, which also changes the power of the lens and further refines your vision. You may need a few treatments with the Light Delivery Device to reach your optimal vision clarity.

What is the Light Adjustable Lens Plus?

The Light Adjustable Lens Plus features a unique design that provides a slightly extended depth of focus compared to the LAL. Similar to the LAL, the LAL+ can be precisely adjusted after surgery using specialized UV light treatments.

The LAL+ provides a wider range of vision compared to the LAL, giving you a better chance of achieving the clear, customized vision you desire.

What Should I Expect

During Light Treatments?

During your follow-up visits, where your eye doctor will fine-tune your vision with the Light Delivery Device, you may experience some mild discomfort, like a warming sensation. The adjustment process is quick and non-invasive.

During the light treatments, you will place your chin on the chin rest and look at a bright light. The light treatment sessions are typically quick and easy.

It may take up to a day for your eyes to adjust and for you to notice an improvement in your vision. Once the final light adjustment is made, the focusing power of the lens is locked in and stable over the long term.

Only routine eye exams and care are required afterward to maintain your vision with the LAL or the LAL+.
