doctor-and-patient-thumbs-up Welcome to the latest installment in our monthly Spotlight Patient series. Regardless of the reason for their visit to our office, it is our goal to provide all of our patients with the best and smoothest experience possible. That’s why it’s so rewarding to receive a testimonial from one of our patients. Seeing these positive firsthand accounts from patients lets us know we’re doing our job right and can help reassure future patients that they are in good hands when they visit Georgia Eye Physicians & Surgeons. This month, we will be focusing on Frank, a long time patient of Dr. William Segal who recently underwent surgery to treat his cataracts.

Like so many other patients, Frank was initially a bit intimidated by the thought of cataract surgery. For years, he was satisfied with his over the counter reading glasses despite continued reading vision loss through the years. “For years Dr. Segal recommended against surgery because my reading vision was not that bad and he did not think my post-surgery experience would meet my expectations.” Finally, Frank’s vision reached the point where Dr. Segal recommended cataract surgery on both of Frank’s eyes to solve his vision issues once and for all.

“My initial cataract surgery on my right eye was scheduled for 7/16/2020. Before surgery, a nurse administered numbing eye drops in my right eye and inserted an IV in my hand so I could receive anesthesia. I was awake and pretty alert when Dr. Segal made the incision in my eye so I could follow his simple instructions. The incision took maybe one minute to complete and I felt absolutely no pain whatsoever. Following the incision I was given anesthesia via the IV.

I was then taken next door to another room where Dr Segal inserted my new lens. After consultation with Dr. Segal it was previously determined that I would receive an IOL lens which corrected my vision at distance, intermediate, and reading distances. That procedure took less than 10 minutes and again I felt no pain and have only a modest memory of the procedure. In no time I was back with my wife in the recovery room.

When I got home I experienced blurred vision, a scratchy feeling under my right eyelid, and a slight sensitivity to indoor lighting. I kept up with my eye drop regimen and by the next morning the feeling under my eyelid was gone, as was the light sensitivity. My blurred vision lasted for about 3 days. By the end of the first week my right eye vision was 20/30 (having been 20/40 pre-surgery) and was improving by the day. At no point was I in any pain or discomfort and I immediately noticed significantly improved distance and intermediate vision. For example, instead of seeing trees I saw the leaves on the tree. I could see blades of grass on my lawn. I could read the dashboard clearly in my car. I didn’t need to set the text on my cell phone to the maximum font.

The following week, Dr. Segal performed the same procedure on my left eye. Same process; no needles, no pain or discomfort of any kind. Having already been through the process, I was more relaxed because now I knew what to expect. When I got home, I had the same mild symptoms, but they improved even faster than they did previously. At my follow-up appointment the day after surgery, my left eye vision had already improved to 20/30.

9 days removed from my initial cataract surgery I am free of my reading glasses. My vision is excellent at all distances and I am reading comfortably. As Dr. Segal told me in my recent appointment, I can expect my vision to continue to improve over the next month or two. I could not be happier to have elected to have cataract surgery with Dr. Segal.

My only regret is that I wish I had done it years ago. The improvement in my quality of life is remarkable. I wanted to share my experience in the hope that I can take some of the apprehension out of cataract surgery and improve more people’s quality of life sooner rather than later.

The most important part of the process for me was choosing the right eye doctor. Dr. Segal is simply outstanding. In addition to my cataracts, I recently had a torn retina. Although Dr. Segal recommended cataract surgery, he would not perform the surgery until my retina was repaired and I had a release from my retina doctor. That personal attention to detail is an excellent example of why I so highly recommend Dr. Segal for long term eyecare and vision health.”

Frank’s story is incredible and we’re so happy to hear that his experience has been so positive. We would like to take a moment to thank Frank, as well as all of our other patients who have taken the time to leave us such kind words through the years.
